YoRHa No.2 Type B

It always... ends like this...

Profile

Origin: NieR: Automata, NieR: Automata Ver1.1a

Age: Unknown

Height: 168cm (including heels)

Race: Robot

Occupation: Combat Unit, Executioner.

Personality: Stoic, dedicated, respectful, kind and sarcastic.

Appearance: 2B's appearance is characterized by a monochromatic black-and-white color scheme and a design that blends Victorian fashion with a punk aesthetic.

She has yellowish-white hair styled in a bob with slightly chopped ends. Her eyes, which are usually covered, are blue-gray or dull blue. She possesses a beauty mark located below the left side of her lips.

A high-slit black turtleneck dress with a high collar and open back that exposes her shoulder blades. The open cleavage area is covered with a lace-patterned fabric featuring the YoRHa logo. The logo is also embroidered along the hem of the skirt. She has puffed sleeves that end in black crow feathers, which are symbolic of death. Her hands are covered by black glove. Her lower attire consists of dark thigh-high garter stockings with black lining and thigh-high black leather boots equipped with heels. Beneath her dress, she wears a white leotard, which becomes visible if her skirt is damaged or removed during a self-destruct sequence.

The most striking element of her design is the standard-issue blindfold-like visor. In the game's lore, it serves as a tactical visor for YoRHa ground troops. It is a visual representation of the "See No Evil" concept, signifying that soldiers are blinded to the truth and meant to follow orders without questioning their superiors. It also serves to obscure her true emotions from others. Her look was created by Akihiko Yoshida and emphasizes a "tasteful" and "elegant" sense of power. The high slit in her dress is functionally justified as it allows for the freedom of movement required for her complex combat animations.

Notable Traits: Stoic professionalism, Hidden Kindness and Emotion, Existential Guilt, Symbolic Blindness and Compliance.

Story

> The Beginning: The "Soldier" Facade

The game begins with 2B deployed to an abandoned factory on Earth to eliminate a "Goliath-class" machine named Engels. During this mission, she meets 9S, a scanner-type android assigned to support her. After a grueling battle, the two are forced to detonate their "black boxes" (their power cores) to destroy multiple Goliaths, effectively sacrificing their current bodies. While 2B’s memories are successfully backed up to the Bunker, 9S only manages to save her data, losing his own memories of their time together. This establishes a recurring theme of grief and repetition for 2B, as she must interact with a 9S who no longer remembers the bond they just formed.

> The Middle: War and Discovery

As they continue their reconnaissance on Earth, 2B and 9S encounter machine lifeforms that display human-like behaviors, including pacifist villages led by Pascal and a religious cult. They also face the humanoid machines Adam and Eve, who represent the evolution of the machine network. Throughout this period, 2B maintains a stoic, "by-the-books" professional exterior, though her emotions occasionally slip—such as when she expresses raw hatred for Adam after he captures and tortures 9S. The first major arc ends with the death of Eve; however, 9S becomes infected with a logic virus during the fight, and 2B is forced to strangle him to death to stop the infection. Although his consciousness is later found to have survived within the machine network, this moment causes 2B immense sorrow.

> The Turning Point: The Fall of YoRHa

Following the destruction of Adam and Eve, YoRHa launches an all-out invasion. This leads to a catastrophic failure when a logic virus infects the YoRHa network, turning the majority of the androids—including those on the Bunker—hostile. 2B and 9S escape the exploding Bunker, but 2B is eventually shot down and infected with the virus herself. Weakened and dying, she encounters the rogue android A2 in the city ruins. Knowing her end is near, 2B entrusts A2 with her sword (which contains her memories) and her final wish: to "take care of the future" and 9S. A2 then performs a mercy killing, impaling 2B just as 9S arrives to witness the scene, leading him to believe A2 murdered her.

> The True Role: YoRHa No.2 Type E

The "main role" 2B played is only fully revealed after her death. Her true designation was YoRHa No.2 Type E (Executioner).

> The End: Breaking the Cycle

In the game’s final ending (Ending E), the tactical support Pods (042 and 153) gain free will and refuse to delete the remaining data of the YoRHa units. They rebel against their programming and rebuild 2B, 9S, and A2 from their salvaged parts and memories, offering them a chance to live in a world finally free from the pre-ordained cycle of war and execution.
